TOOLS OF THE TRADE FOR ADJUSTERS

Preparing for the 2023 Hurricane Season

June marks the start of the hurricane season which typically runs until November. Current predictions suggest that 2023 could be quite active.

Staying prepared for storm season is essential for independent adjusters. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and forecasts from reliable sources . Predictions and insights can help you anticipate the level of demand for your services and prepare accordingly.

  2. Keep Your Equipment Ready: Your tools of the trade are your lifelines in storm season. Ensure your devices, software, and other tools are in good working order. Have backup equipment if possible, and make sure everything is ready to go at a moment's notice.

  3. Review Insurance Policies: Brush up on the types of insurance policies you'll be dealing with. Understanding the coverage and exclusions in homeowners, flood, and wind insurance policies will help you handle claims more efficiently.

  4. Stay Organized: Make sure your paperwork and digital files are in order. This includes insurance forms, past claims, and relevant contacts. An efficient filing system can save you a lot of time during the busy storm season.

  5. Be Ready to Travel: As an independent adjuster, you might have to travel to affected areas on short notice. Keep a travel bag packed with essentials, and make sure your vehicle is in good condition.

  6. Take Care of Your Health: Storm season can be stressful and require long hours. Make sure you're taking care of your physical and mental health. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, get plenty of rest, and take breaks when needed.

  7. Network: Stay connected with your peers, industry groups, and insurance companies. Networking can provide valuable support and resources during the storm season.

Remember, the key to navigating storm season successfully as an independent adjuster is preparedness. Stay informed, stay equipped, and stay connected.

My name is Alesha Lofton. I am an Independent Adjuster and the CEO of Dream Team 3 Adjusting Academy. I’m also known in the adjusting industry as Your Adjuster Homegirl. I experienced my 1st NACA Conference in 2022 at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.I enjoyed it so much that I was proud to do what I am passionate about, which is teaching at the 2023 NACA Conference. The conference was held at the Rio in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Every Adjuster or inspiring Adjuster should experience the NACA conference no matter if you are a new or experienced Adjuster. This is your opportunity to be more than just a number on an Independent Adjuster Firm’s roster by meeting the IA firms in person for interviews. The NACA conference is a one stop shop for networking, building rapport and relationships, collaboration, obtaining continuing education hours, trainings and certifications. Who knows, you might just walk away deployed, for I was offered a deployment opportunity on-site in 2022 and there were a few Adjusters that left the NACA Conference early this year after being deployed on site at their interview!

I met all types of Adjusters with diverse backgrounds, experience and skill sets! During my Hurricane Ian deployment in Florida as a Flood Field Adjuster with Colonial Claims, I was able to contact a fellow Field Property Adjuster I met at the 2022 NACA conference to help me with Xactimate. This same Adjuster was willing to let another Adjuster I recently referred to him shadow him on some daily claims. This is a prime example of how beneficial networking can be at the NACA conference.

You will meet some amazing people and companies that can help elevate your adjusting career to the next level. Bruce Authement is one of those individuals. Bruce is an Xactimate Certified Trainer and was voted in as the current President of NACA in 2023. Bruce is a people’s person. He is passionate about what he does. When I had questions, issues or concerns, Bruce always showed up to listen and offer advice and/or solutions.

Attending the NACA Conference is the best investment that you could ever make in yourself and your adjusting career!

I am honored and delighted to be a part of the NACA Committee as I help bring creative ideas to make the 2024 NACA Conference one of the most memorable conferences in NACA history!

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone at the 2024 NACA Conference in Reno, Nevada.

P.S. Don't forget to get your early bird tickets this summer and consider investing in a NACA membership! Visit NACA's website for the benefits you will receive with your NACA membership.

Yours Truly,
Your Adjuster Homegirl
